Plain answers to the questions counterparties ask most.
Upstream covers exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. Midstream handles transportation, storage and initial processing through pipelines and tankers. Downstream refines crude into products like gasoline and petrochemicals, then markets and distributes them to consumers.
Prices respond to the balance of supply and demand, OPEC production decisions, geopolitical events, inventory levels, currency strength and broader economic growth. Seasonal demand and refining capacity also play a role.
OPEC is the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. By coordinating production quotas among member states, it can tighten or loosen global supply, which directly influences world oil prices.
Brent is sourced from the North Sea and serves as the main international benchmark. WTI is a lighter, sweeter US benchmark. The two usually trade at a small spread driven by location and logistics.
API gravity measures how light or heavy a crude is relative to water. Lighter crudes generally yield more high value products and command higher prices, so API gravity helps determine quality and value.
The terms refer to sulfur content. Sweet crude has low sulfur and is cheaper to refine. Sour crude has higher sulfur, needs more processing and typically sells at a discount.
Crude moves by pipeline, ocean tanker, rail and tanker truck. Pipelines and tankers carry the largest volumes over long distances, while rail and trucks handle shorter routes and last mile delivery.
Refineries convert crude into usable products such as diesel, jet fuel, gasoline and petrochemical feedstocks. They link upstream producers with downstream buyers.
Products trade through spot deals for immediate delivery, term contracts over a fixed period, and futures used for pricing and hedging. Brokers and verified intermediaries match qualified sellers and buyers.
Proven reserves have generally held steady or grown as technology unlocks new sources. The longer term shift is toward cleaner energy, but oil and gas remain central to the global economy for now.
